How to use a ball valve (operating guide)

A ball valve is a quarter-turn directional valve that uses a rotating, perforated hollow ball to control the flow of fluid through it. Here's how to operate and maintain it correctly:

1. Basic Operation (On / Off)

• To Open (Full Flow): Turn the handle parallel to the pipe. When the handle is aligned with the pipeline, the internal ball's hole is in line with the fluid path, allowing maximum media flow.
• To Close (Zero Flow): Turn the handle perpendicular (90 degrees) to the pipe. When the handle forms a right angle with the pipeline, the solid wall of the internal ball blocks the fluid completely.

2. Best Practices & Instructions:

• Use for Isolation Only: Ball valves are engineered for Fully Open or Fully Closed operations. Do not use them for throttling (keeping them half-open), as high-velocity fluid can erode the soft Teflon seats, causing future leaks.
• Check the Indicator: If the handle is removed or automated, check the slot on top of the valve stem. The direction of the slot indicates the orientation of the internal ball.

Prevent Water Hammer: Turn the handle smoothly. Snapping a ball valve closed too fast in high-pressure lines can cause sudden hydraulic shock waves (water hammer), which can crack pipes or instruments downstream.
